विश्व के कुछ देशों में शिक्षकों को विशेष सम्मान देने के लिए Teacher's day मनाया जाता है। कई देशों में इस दिन छुट्टी होती है और कई देश इस दिन कार्यरत रहते हुए शिक्षक दिवस मनाते हैं। अलग अलग देशों में शिक्षक दिवस अलग-अलग तारीखों को मनाया जाता है। भारत के भूतपूर्व राष्ट्रपति डॉ सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन का जन्म दिवस ५ सितंबर शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। चीन में 1931 की शुरुआत की गई थी और बाद में कन्फ्यूशियस के जन्मदिन 27 अगस्त को शिक्षक दिवस घोषित किया गया।
इसी तरह रुस में 1964-1994 तक अक्टूबर के पहले Sunday को Teacher's day के रुप में मनाया जाता था। जब साल 1994 से 5 अक्टूबर को विश्व शिक्षक दिवस मनाया गया तो इससे समन्वय स्थापित करने के लिए रुस ने भी इसी दिन शिक्षक दिवस मनाना शुरू कर दिया। कई देशों में इस दिन शिक्षकों को उनके विशेष योगदान के लिए सम्मानित किया जाता है। 1994 के बाद लगभग 100 से अधिक देशों में शिक्षक दिवस मनाया जाता है।
